Open Wiss-Websites-Processing.xls.
Rebuild Sitemap after any changes.
— Adding Hotel —
Find where it fits into the location order.
Add to: HotelData.txt and NameList.txt in same location. An edit will stop you if they aren't.
— Updating Google Map —
Click link on home page
Click EDIT
Click Add layer
Click Import under the new untitled layer.
Drag the csv file from the site-building folder to the web page.
Click continue. Select Title. Click continue again.
You now need to delete the old layer, which is above the new layer. Click the three dots.
— Adding Brochure —
Note that for brochures only there is a naming convention that must be followed:
A name cannot be a subset of another name. There is an edit.
- Follow scanning.htm.
- Use ImageUtilities tab to Resize Proportionately. Use 0.375 proportion and 80% quality.
- Thumbnail made with IrfanView -- front page only -- to max of 200 pixels in either direction at 100% quality. Now just at estimated quality. There is only a thumbnail for the cover. Any more will cause an image unsed error, but without the -tn suffix.
Careful minor cropping and cleaning is done before reduction.
Make 200px high.
Thumbnails are named with a -tn suffix to base name.
- Add row to BrochuresList.txt file. Click link on Dashboard tab to edit. Alpha order, by date within hotel. Columns are labeled in temporary editing worksheet. Must use buttons to close worksheet.
- Move images to /brochures/images/ folder.
- On Dashboard tab, first press button for [Create Home Index & Hotel Pages], then press [Create Brochures].
— Special Features for Postcards/Photos/Clippings —
Subtitles
In these three sections a + symbol in Column (B) in the editing worksheet turns that row into a subtitle. And the contents of Column (D) become the subtitle.
Combining images
— Adding Postcards —
- Follow scanning.htm.
- Postcards are scanned at 600 dpi. File size/quality up one notch.
- I scan two at a time, and fully process them before moving on.
- Original sized image has "-f" suffix. web-size and webp images will have no suffix. Thumbnail has "-tn" suffix.
- Backs have "-back" suffix to base name (before "-f").
Open the master image front. Clean corners with clone tool (IrfanView F12, say 40 pixels). After cleaning the master's corners I now save it with best guess compression. Then make two sub-images:
- web images are 25%. with best guess compression (IrfanView: Ctrl-R, Alt-H, Alt-H, Alt-O, Enter) or more recently 86%
- thumbnails 200 max, with best guess compression (-tn.jpg extension)
Open back image.
- web images are also 25%. with best guess compression.
- Using button on Dashboard sheet, edit table with each image in a row. Must use buttons to close temporary editing worksheet.
- The count that switches to a slide show is at the top of the Jamaica code module.
— Adding Clippings —
Clipping from NewspaperArchive.com
- Entire Page - is too small to be useable:
- Click Save in upper right on toolbar.
- Select JPG image. Leave defaults with newspaper first in filename. Click Save.
- Part of Page (which gets a more useful image, even for entire pages):
- There are limitations. The maximum width a clipping can be is 1500 pixels. If your article goes across the entire page, the print will be small. Consider clipping in pieces. (And they will have to show up as multiple thumbnails.)
- Click the Clip icon in toolbar. Can overstretch it and crop later. Click Clip.
- Click Save.
- Click down arrow in window title bar.
- Select JPG image. Leave defaults with newspaper first in filename. Click Save.
- Close Details box before closing browser window or moving to next page.
- You need to immediately rename the file! Before IrfanView editing you must change the file extemsion to jpg.
Convention is: Kingston-Gleaner-YYYY-MM-DD-p00-f [If 400 px or less, then no -f suffix. It will be the master.]
Clipping from Newspapers.com
- Click Clip & More in upper right
- Click Print or Download
- Click Select portion of page
- Adjust area corner tags
- Click Save as JPG
- Rename the file. You will have to get the page number from the web page headings. No underscores.
Convention is: Newspaper-Name-YYYY-MM-DD-p00-f [If 400 px or less, then no -f suffix. It will be the master.]
Cleaning up Clippings and Processing
It is hard to get a clean clip (at least with NewspaperArchive).
Use IrfanView to crop a little cleaner. And remove the edges of adjacent articles with Erase.
Often for newspaper clippings I make 400 px per column.
Then save with "Try to save with original JPG quality (estimation)."
Put all cleaned clippings in the temp folder under the scans folder.
Open an image and press T for Thumbnails in IrfanView. Review them.
On ImageUtilities tab make thumbnails. Quality e; Max Width/Height 200. Check Give -tn suffix. If newspapers, then Sharpen.
Sort by date. Move thumbnails to: JamaicaHotelHistory.com\clippings\images
Also move any images without -f suffix.
Go through each one with IrfanView and reduce, usually with Sharpening, but test each.
If from Gleaner, Run utility on Create Gleaner Clippings Workbook button
Copy hotel names down columns.
- Most ads are displayed full size, but if too big:
- Rename original with -f at the end
- Use Resize Proportionately on ImageUtilities sheet to make web-size
- Put image in: JamaicaHotelHistory.com\clippings\images
- Add to ClippingsList.txt with button on Dashboard sheet.
— Adding Tourism —
These pages are hand coded. Clone similar htm file.
scan cover first, before pulling book apart.
scan all, processing each page after its scan.
for pages with multiple images, name the entire scan with the name and the letter a after the page number.
Using jpegcrop, starting with the last ad, save them with changing the a to the appropriate letter
When finished, move to the temp folder under the scan folder.
On the ImageUtilities tab:
- press to clean. a must if jpegcrop was used
- list file sizes. adjust crop to even out sizes. clean again, if jpegcrop was used
- list files, using button copy filenames to Notepad
- using Replace, remove the -f.jpg
- add tourism\ in front of the names
- Create Link Text. Path prefix is images/ and Entry Type is 1
- Resize: First Process button is 80% and 0.375 Proportion
- Resize: Second Process button is Quality e, and Max Width and Height is 200. give -tn suffix
- the first thumbnail needs to be renamed without the page number
- move all to the images folder
- on Dashboard tab open Edit ClippingsList.txt
- add many rows in the appropriate place. empty rows will be deleted when saving
- copy in the list you have in Notebook
- fill in the other columns
- Follow scanning.htm. Put files in temp folder.
N.B. If making a slide show, all must be cropped to the same size. Use "List Sizes of Images" on ImageUtilities tab.
- Resize (-f files) on ImageUtilities tab:
- Quality: If a lot of pages I lower to 75%. Otherwise 80%.
- Proportion:
- Booklet pages 8.5x11 are reduced at 0.3125.
- Small books could be 0.5.
- Otherwise 0.375 (e.g. Focus on Jamaica).
- Create Link Text on ImageUtilities tab:
- Path Prefix: images/
- Entry Type:
- blank for large web-size images
- 1 for books chopped into small pieces - hand enter section breaks
- 10 - javascript slide show (all found will be in slide show). all images must be same size. A working example.
- Move images to /tourism/images/ folder
- I usually do the web-sized first, and move those to check out the page links. Image corrections can be made before thumbnails.
- Keeping the -f files behind allows for more link building and other capture
- one capture example: with only the -f files in temp, list sizes. Then copy the file name column. Paste in Notepad.
Using Replace remove the -f.jpg. Now you have a list to modify and use as the start in the clippings file.
- clone htm file in tourism folder
- add to index.htm file
- press [Run All NavCode] button

- Widen Column B in Editing sheet.
- I add to the clippings sheet before making the thumbnails. This combined ones there are the ones I have to make combined thumbnails for.
- Double-click on a. Image -> Create Panorama Image
click Vertical. Click [Add current file]. Click [Add images]. Select second. Spacing is 0. Click [Create image]. Ctrl-R to Resize. Enter 200. Resize.
- When saving: Set to jpg. Select the second and edit to a -tn suffix.

— Adding Map —
All files under the main index are create by a macro. Underlying data can be found by clicking Edit: Maps Data.
Resizing is generally 0.375, but some done at 0.3125.
Depending on image size, quality can be 85% down to 70%.
At 70% some of the street names on the large maps are hard to read. So no lower.
Last batch was 80% and two at 70%.

Careful cropping and cleaning is done before reduction.
