The Fairfield Hotel. Beside the St. James Country Club, race course and polo grounds.
- Open by 1936. Initially managed by Mrs. Coke-Kerr, until she switched to Beach View in November 1938. Had 9-hole golf course and eight turf tennis courts at the Country Club.
- In December 1938 there was a new annex.
- In 1961 the hotel was closed and fully furnished apartments and a cottage were put up for rent. The hotel equipment was auctioned off.
- In October 1964 a fire destroyed the cottage.
- By 1966 it was operating as a hotel again, managed by Alan Hart.
- In June 1972 the hotel changed ownership and the entire staff was laid off. Some of the men became indignant, and after the general manager left for the weekend the men set a fire that gutted the entire front office and caused $20,000 in damage.
- In November 1972 the hotel became a health resort, mainly concerned with Regeneration Therapy (provides an understanding and supportive atmosphere utilizing psychotherapy, counseling, and coaching). The hotel was sited on 19 acres of land with the great house overlooking a swimming pool. Accommodation consisted of 30 double rooms. For tennis there were six grass courts and three hard courts.
- In February 1975 an open-air theater was built at the hotel. The Fairfield Theatre was the first place specifically designed for theatrical performances in Montego Bay.
- By 1981 the hotel was a medical center and not a hotel.
- By 2004, on the property, part of the Barnett Estate & Plantation, the 17th century Bellefield Great House & Gardens was a restaurant and museum.
In this
Wikimapia satellite photo the red roofed house would be the great house. Another house would be the plantation manager's house. Note the decaying tennis courts off in the lower right, alongside The Fairfield Theatre.
