Pine Grove Hotel, Guava Ridge. 3,560 feet up in salubrious climate (4,000 feet claimed). Popular with Kingstonians to get away from the heat. A weekend and honeymoon hotel.
- Established in the late 1930s by Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth A. Clarke
- The first Gleaner hotel mention is April 1942. Someone is selling a house near the hotel.
- The next Gleaner mention is January 1957. A honeymoon is being spent at the hotel.
- In September 1957, the hotel is sold by the Clarkes to Mr. Pat W. Chung. He plans to continue operating the hotel as a vacation resort and plans to construct a number of small bungelows.
- Mark Gentles's mother managed the hotel for the years 1956-1959.
- The hotel comes under the ownership of Vernon and Olive James. Mr. James was to a youngster a huge imposing gentleman who was an agriculture specialist and Superintendent of Public Parks and Gardens. At the hotel they grew plants and flowers, and used them for decorating weddings and parties.
- In May 1960 the hotel was completely modernized and is now open. Mrs. James is the manageress.
- The next ad for the hotel is March 1961. Then they advertised once a month. After a few months the ads become display ads. Ads were not in high season.
- Ads became more often, starting in March 1964, and now also ran in high season. The ads always varied a little.
- Starting in April 1965 the ads became almost daily. Big emphasis on honeymoons and holiday weekends. The ads continue through August 1972.
- Blue Mountain Resorts development lots, adjacent to the hotel, are available in October 1965.
- In January 1966, the hotel offers for sale, 22 acres adjoining the hotel, suitable for growing. Also 3 acres beautiful site for summer residence. It does not appear to have been sold.
- Starting in March 1969, the hotel is also advertising a flower shop at 5 Mona Plaza in Kingston. The shop is doing the booking for the hotel. With flowers presumably coming from the hotel property. The combo ads continue through August 1972.
- In November 1971, it is noted that Mr. James is still the owner of the hotel.
- In November 1972, Mrs. Edith James becomes the manageress of The Village branch, recently of the hotel.
- In April 1974, there were a couple of ads.
- The James' had a grandson who drowned in the pool as a baby.
- In 1975, gunmen broke in on the Jameses (they did not live at the hotel). Vernon was beaten to death and Olive was left severely injured.
- After Olive's beating, she sold the Pine Grove Flower Shop to Pat Hollar and it became Pat's Flower Shop. The shop is still around, owned and operated now by Marguerite Malabre Harris.
- In March 1976 the trial was held. See clippings.
- The men convicted of Mr. James's murder were to be hung in May 1979, but the hangings were stayed.
- In September 1982, the hotel reopens as Pine Grove Mountain Chalets with 20 rooms. Marcia and Ronnie Thwaites are managing the hotel in conjunction with Mr. and Mrs. Roderick McKinley. Ronnie Thwaites is an attorney and host of "The Public Eye" on JBC, a daily radio show. Numerous Gleaner articles over controversial things he said. The hotel is now on the grounds of a coffee plantation.
- In December 1982, a gate prize was a weekend at the hotel.
- In February 1983, a four day seminar was held at the hotel.
- On October 24, 1983 and April 24, 1985, large ads, the only ads in this era, appear in the Gleaner.
- In March 1985, Kenneth Clarke dies.
- In May 1985, Grace Tours is including the hotel as an option in packaged tours.
- In June 1985, a gala gave away a prize of a weekend at the hotel.
- In April 1986, a leadership conference was held at the hotel.
- In July 1986, a week long co-op workshop was held at the hotel. The last mention in the Gleaner.
- The hotel is now City of Refuge, a home for 56 children, directed by Glad Tidings Church. On 26 acres.
