Runaway Bay
Runaway Bay Hotel.
- Golf course designed in 1960.
- Hotel opened on December 15, 1961. It had 104 rooms on 19 acres of beachfront land.
- Then Runaway Bay Hotel & Golf Club.
- Then called Runaway Bay Hotel & Country Club.
- In March 1978, Bell Captain A.S. Scott reports they are having their biggest season since 1963. The hotel is owned by NHP and leased by Fitzroy International Incorporated. Occupancy has been 50% in January, 71% in February, and 95% in March. Most of the business is from incentive groups. They plan to upgrade the hotel and aim for a luxury image and an affluent market.
- In 1984 it became Jamaica Jamaica, an all-inclusive, after extensive renovations. There was to be a swimming pool with waterfall in the lobby, and the discotheque downstairs and the dining room upstairs will be turned around. The country club was not included. Lessee was Innovative Resorts Limited, a local private sector interest.
- At some point SuperClubs took over.
- In 1999, the property was redeveloped by SuperClubs as Hedonism III Resort.
- A building, now torn down (presumably in 1999), is pictured on the Runaway Bay Hotel Jamaica record album cover. The album is reviewed at Mento Music: Arthur Knibbs.
- In Fall 2010 it was rebranded as a more conservative SuperFun Resort & Spa. That didn't last long. It went into receivership in March 2011.
- Then it was Breezes Runaway Bay Resort & Golf.
- In Spring 2012 SuperClubs closed it. It became the Jewel Runaway Bay Beach & Golf Resort.
- In 2018 Sagicor Group Jamaica sold the hotel to Playa Hotels & Resorts. It had 268 rooms.
- In May 2020 it was sold to Sandals. Plans are for extensive redevelopment to become Beaches Runaway Bay Resort. At its completion, the hotel will feature an estimated 400 expansive one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom suites, designed with extended families in mind.
- The hotel may have operated for the 2020-21 season, then shut down for the renovations.
