Verney House Hotel → Tropical Terrace Hotel → Verney House Hotel → Verney House Resort
Verney House Hotel, 3 Leader Ave. In the Red Hills section overlooking Cornwall.
- Opened 1957. Frederick W. West was the owner. "Miss G" [Miss Gertrude dePass] was asked to take over running it, and she did. Later she says she ran the hotel during the summer seasons while the owner ran it during the winter.
- On February 28, 1958 the hotel held a first anniversary barbecue dance and floor show.
- In 1960 the hotel was sold to some American investors and became known as Tropical Terrace Hotel. Mr. David Henner was running the place.
- "Miss G" left in 1963(?).
- In February 1965 the hotel was purchased by "Miss G." It was a series of white and yellow rooms perched willynilly on a hill above Montego Bay that catered mostly to locals. It now had 23 double rooms, a new kitchen and a new bar. It served lots of Jamaican food, especially at their Saturday Jamaican Night Buffet. See November 23, 1965 clipping.
- By 1986 Ernest and Kathleen Sterling were the hotel's owners and operators. The hotel did very poorly that season.
- In 1989 the hotel was doing well.
- In July 1997 Ernest Sterling reported that generally his hotel has not been doing well, but better than a worse prior year. He blamed it on the high level of tourist harassment.
- In 2014 the Sterlings were still running the hotel.
- On December 25, 2018 Kathleen Sterling died.
- In 2020 Ernest Sterling died.
- Still there, and still family run.
